Report on Community Forums
@ City of Austin - Council Meeting, 6:30 pm
http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/agenda/2005/council_052605_linked.htm

The City of Austin, http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/, in collaboration with the RJW Group Solutions Team, has completed a series of community forums. The report will be submitted to City Council at City Hall on May 26, 2005 at 6:30 PM. For the majority of the African American Community this will be the first time they will see and hear the results from the forums. Therefore, it is being proposed by several community stakeholder's for City Council not to take any action on May 26, 2005 except for setting a public hearing to receive community feedback on June 23, 2005. The action will allow the African American Community an opportunity to review the report and provide responses that have been thought through.

If you support this position please immediately take the following actions:

1. Call any Council Member requesting their vote not to take action on the report May 26, 2005. Further, request the City Council Member to support setting a post report public hearing on June 23, 2005, with a time certain, for a public hearing on the recommendations that have been presented by RJW.

2. Attend and encourage other African Americans to attend the City Council meeting on May 26, 2005 to support the position outlined in this communication, and voice the necessity to improve the the quality of life for African Americans in the City of Austin as a whole.

3. Share this communication with as many African Americans (i.e. church members, colleagues, neighbors, family, and friends) possible.

The Presidents from the three primary organizations (Urban League, African American Chamber, NAACP) should speak first to set the stage for the request to postpone, followed by all other stakeholder's and concerned citizens. If you attend the meeting on May 26, 2005 but are unable to stay to speak or it is not your desire to speak, please sign in to show your support of the request to postpone.

The proposed short term mission is simply to delay any action by Council until after the proposed public hearing on June 23, 2005. Please make every effort to ensure through your attendance that our passion to see a change in our community is well represented, and that we demonstrate our commitment to working together as one team towards one dream.

Thank you for your support, leadership, and interest!

The Austin NAACP, the Capital City Chamber of Commerce, the Urban League, and Community Stakeholders will co-convene a community Town Hall Meeting at Huston-Tillotson University, King-Seabrook Chapel, on Saturday, June 11, 2005 from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. The focus will be on framing sustainable recommendations and actions that can be implemented by the City of Austin to improve the quality of life for African Americans.

The purpose of this community Town hall meeting is to:

  • Provide an opportunity for the African American Community to provide additional input regarding recommendations in the RJW Group Solutions report

book signing by Marvie EllisBuzz about the novel is quickly spreading. Publishers Weekly recently listed Red Polka Dot In A World Full of Plaid as one of the "titles to watch" in the magazine's Fall 2005 Preview. Johnson's novel is one of twenty-two titles previewed in the Trade Paperback: Fiction/First Novels and Collections list.

Red Polka Dot in a World Full of Plaid centers on Maxine Phillips, sassy, headstrong, young woman that uses her quick wit and sharp tongue to mask her true feelings. However, her emotions get the best of her when she learns the father she thought dead is alive, and that her mother has been lying about his death for her entire life. On impulse, Maxine and her best friend, Deke, set out cross-country for the small town where her father lives. But instead of finding the father of her dreams, she meets a man that is nothing like she expected. Despite her initial misgivings, Maxine decides to stay and get to know her father. As she learns to accept her father, she begins to learn to accept herself.
